Blog Tour of Black Rainbow by J.J. McAvoy -- REVIEW

I have made my love for Amazon bestselling author J.J. McAvoy's books well known ever since I've read Ruthless People. That trilogy gave me such a high that I feared her other creations wouldn't measure up to it. So before turning to the first page of Black Rainbow, I tried my best to not expect anything. I kept telling myself that I had to be unbiased and read it with fresh eyes. As it turns out, it didn't even matter! This book...this story...*sigh*

SYNOPSIS:
After an erotic one-week fling with a musician she meets in a bar, Thea Cunning never expects to see Levi Black again. Then Monday morning comes around, and she discovers that her former lover is not only her professor, but he’s also one of the top criminal lawyers in the state of Massachusetts.

With everyone in class vying to be one of the twelve disciples—a group of twelve students that Professor Black takes under his wing—tensions run high. Thea considers dropping his class, given their passionate week together and their undeniable chemistry. After all, there are other (less infuriatingly sexy) law professors on campus.

But to accomplish her goal and get her father out of prison, Thea knows she needs to learn under the best of the best—and that’s Levi Black.

But can she learn under the best, without being under the best?

CHARACTER BACKGROUND:
Thea Cunning is a female Jaden Smith. Born from two highly respected people; a mother known as "The Shark" in the law industry, and a father known as one of the best writers in the newspaper publishing world. She's smart, driven, passionate, independent, and broken. She will do everything necessary to reach her goal, even if it means turning into the one person she hates the most...her mother.

Levi Black is the most complex person there is. He's a musician, a wonderful lover, a pettrifying professor, and the best lawyer in the U.S. He's madly in love with Thea, but several factors hinder them to be together.

TO LOVE:
I loved Black Rainbow. It's as simple as that. Let me share my reasons with you.

The characters:

Nobody in this story can be described as the "what you see is what you get" type. There's depth in each and every one of them, they all have secrets, and they're very unpredictable. I'm not just talking about the lead roles; this applies to EVERYONE in the book. Thea for example, at the beginning she seems to be
carefree and lives in the moment. As the story progresses, we find out that she's not like that at all. She doesn't trust many people, doesn't let anyone get too close to her [heart], and won't let anyone get in her way. At the first few pages, Levi is introduced as a terror -- an asshole, if you will-- but one that has the right to be so, if you ask me. He's the best at what he does, and he doesn't like wasting his time with incapable students and nonsense. But during the flashbacks throughout the book, we see a completely different person. One that is playful, passionate, and charming. I don't want to give too much away about the other characters, but I'm sure you all get my point, right?

The dialogue:

One of the things I loved about the Ruthless People series is the language. I got the same satisfaction with Black Rainbow and wasn't at all disappointed. There weren't cavity-inducing sentiments which is great since it wouldn't fit the characters at all. But it doesn't mean there weren't butterflies-in-you-tummy lines, oh ho-ho, there were plenty! Here's one of my favorites:

There was a lump in my throat, and I squeezed her hand as I looked back up at the sky.
"Star light, star bright, the many stars I see tonight, I wish I may, I wish I might, keep this girl for the rest of my life."

Now tell me that didn't make you swoon a bit. The banter between Thea and Levi was...inspiring. I love debates and having smart arguments, so this appealed to me A LOT. Their repartee made me a tad envious because I can't remember the last time I had a conversation as interesting as the one they shared many times in the story.

The story:

It's not uncommon to read about a man and a woman who catches each other's eyes in a sea of people, feel strongly attracted to one another, hook up, go their separate ways only to see each other again in the classroom. Difference is, one of them is the professor (usually the male) and the other one a student. But what sets this story apart is the sub-stories; cases here and there, turmoil with Thea's family and past, struggle to accomplishing goals and doing the right thing. Those parts made the story more interesting as a whole.

TO BLEH:
I get that this book is about romance, but I was craving for more scenes in the courtroom. There was only one scene that showcases Levi's amazing skills in court, and that wasn't enough for me. His talent was boasted about a lot, so I was expecting to be shown proof that his reputation is well-earned. Other than that, I don't really have anything negative to say about Black Rainbow.

SUMMARY:
4 stars for J.J. McAvoy's Black Rainbow. I fell in love with the characters (though I've noticed our author likes creating heroines who have commitment issues), adored the story, and melted from the intimate scenes. Pick this up you guys, it's a great read.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
I’m a twenty-year-old something born in Montreal, Canada but currently living in Virginia for school. I would tell you want my major is however after two years I still have no idea what I’m doing.

So I’m a writer (duh that’s how you found me), movie enthusiast, and self-proclaimed chef. I love music even though I can’t sing or dance to save my life. (That doesn’t necessarily stop me but you’ve been warned.)

I started Ruthless People the summer of 2013 in hopes of giving myself a new type of love and crime drama. I never knew so many people thought like me! I feel truly blessed to have fans like you all! Writing is my true love and having you all enjoy my words is a dream come true.
