Title: Kiss Me That Way (Cottonbloom #1)
Author: Laura Trentham
Release Date: May 31, 2016
Published by: St. Martin’s Paperbacks

SYNOPSIS:

A river divides Cottonbloom in two: the upscale enclave on the Mississippi side and the rundown, rough and tumble side in Louisiana. They’re worlds apart—but nothing can build a bridge like love…

Cade Fournette never had it easy Cottonbloom. He stuck around long enough to raise his orphaned siblings and then hightailed it out West—and never looked back. Even though he’s made a success of himself in Seattle, Cade never lost the toughness and the angry edge that helped him survive down South. His only weak spot: the girl he left behind…

Monroe Kirby came from the wealthy side of town, but that didn’t protect her from her mother’s drinking—or her mother’s boyfriend. It was Cade who did that, on a long-ago hot September night, before he disappeared…along with a piece of her heart. Now Monroe is a physical therapist who can fight for herself, and it’s Cade who could use some conditioning when he makes an unexpected return back home. Will he and Monroe pick up where they left off and finally explore their mutual passion—or will the scars and secrets of the past divide them once more?

EXCERPT:

“You left Cottonbloom without telling me. Without saying good-bye. I want to know why.” Monroe hadn’t meant for the words to come out at all, much less with such vehemence.

“It was complicated.” Cade broke eye contact. “You were a good kid in a bad situation.”

“Weren’t you a good kid in a bad situation?”

He shifted toward her, bracing a hand on the dash and laying his other arm over the back of her seat, invading her space. She didn’t retreat. His intensity spurred her heart rate into an erratic gallop, yet she wasn’t intimidated. Perhaps it was only echoes of the past, but he made her feel safe, even when he was the one she should be scared of.

“I grew up fast and tough.” His voice contained more than a hint of warning.

“You were nice to me,” she said softly.

“Don’t fool yourself into thinking I’m nice. I wasn’t then, and I’m sure as hell not now.”

He ran a callused finger down her cheek, the rasp igniting her nerve endings like a flint. His hand continued south and wrapped itself in her braid, the slight tug on her scalp sending shivers through her body in spite of the sun bearing down on the truck. Her nipples felt tight, and she hoped her tight sports tank masked her sudden, inexplicable arousal.

He pulled her braid, forcing her toward him. She didn’t fight him. He dropped his face next to hers, his coarse beard hair caressing her cheek, his mouth close to her ear. “If I see something I want, I go after it and get it by any means necessary.”

“How very Machiavellian.” She tried a laugh, but it came out more like a stuttering sigh. His scent hooked her even closer, and her lips grazed the outer rim of his ear.

He pulled back, his green-eyed gaze roving her face. She returned the favor, noting the faint brackets around his mouth, the crinkles at his eyes, the thick beard. A full-grown man. Yet was he so different from the boy she remembered?

“Ovid.” The movement of his lips jammed the cogs of her brain. The word made no sense. Her confusion must have been obvious, because the mouth she stared at tipped up in the corners, deepening the grooves. “The Greek philosopher Ovid, not Machiavelli, actually wrote: The end justifies the means.”

“Ovid. Of course.” Apparently, Monroe had slept through that philosophy class at Ole Miss. The fact that high-school dropout Cade Fournette was quoting Ovid made her wonder what other mysteries she might uncover if she went digging.

Just when she was ready to grab a shovel, he released her braid and slipped away. His limp was less pronounced as he took the stairs holding the cane parallel to the ground. Although he’d physically released her, she felt bound to him in some other fundamental way, incapable of tearing her eyes off him until he disappeared behind Sawyer’s front door. Even then, she sat, unable to drive away for a long minute.

How could the simple brush of Cade’s finger ignite a fire when other men left her cold? As her arousal ebbed, she realized something else. She’d just been manipulated by a master. He hadn’t explained why he left.

She spent the evening going through the motions of her life, eating when her stomach growled and heading to bed when her eyes felt heavy. A few short hours ago, her life had been tidy and predictable and boring. Cade Fournette’s return had spun her into chaos.

EXCERPT:

Kate stared at herself in the mirror.

This is just pretend.

What was wrong with her? She’d spent all week fortifying her internal defenses. When he’d offered to bring her dinner or keep her company, she’d assured him Beth was taking good care of her. Now, with only a few words from Margaret, she’d let herself slip back into fantasy.

A fantasy where she could kiss James whenever she wanted. Where his strong arms held her at night.

A tremor passed through her.

No! She was stronger than this. She needed to convince his family and the other guests they were dating, not herself. She tore her eyes from the bathroom mirror and unzipped the garment bag that hung from the shower curtain rod.

She shimmied into the blue lace dress.

She had to admit, Ainsley had been right about it.

The fabric skimmed over her body and showed precisely the right amount of leg. Or it would, once she got it zipped. She twisted and turned and wiggled, but couldn’t reach the zipper.

Crap. She had to ask James for help.

She took a deep breath and knocked on the door leading back to the hotel room.

“I’m dressed.” His deep voice sent goose bumps over her skin.

She cracked the door and poked her head through. “I hate to ask you this, but I’m stuck. I need you to zip me up. Please.”

He kept his attention on the cufflink he was hooking through his button hole. “Sure.”

She only hesitated for a moment before she stepped from the bathroom and spun, to give him access to her back.

There was a zipping sound as his fingers skated over the fabric.

She exhaled sharply. There. It was over. She turned back to him. “Thank you. I’ll be ready in one minute. I have to find my necklace first.”

“You look amazing.” James' voice caught as he stared at her, his eyes a vivid, brilliant gray.

Kate couldn’t tear herself away from him. His gaze pierced her, suspending her in time and space.

He stepped toward her, curled his palm around the back of her neck and lowered his mouth to hers. A delicious tingle surged through her blood and down to her toes as their lips met. He snaked his other arm around her waist and pulled her against him as his tongue swept into her mouth.

She tilted her head back and gave herself over to him, reveling in the feel of his lips against hers. His kiss turned rougher, more urgent. Her knees went weak and her head swam as she clutched him.

Her tongue tangled with his, matching him stroke for stroke. All rational thought fled her mind and she was engulfed in a cloud of James: his smell, his taste, his touch.

He pulled back for a second and his eyes glinted as he traced his thumb over her cheek. Then he tightened his grip around her waist and took the fullness of her lower lip in his mouth. A tiny moan escaped her as he sucked gently. With every stroke of his tongue, her body melted further into his. His fingers dug into her back and she could feel his heart pound through his dress shirt.

A knock sounded on the door and she stepped back abruptly, breaking the kiss.

His eyes burned with an intensity that sucked all the air from her lungs. She shifted her gaze to the floor.

No one had ever kissed her like that.

Review of Sugar by Olivia Thomas

March 20, 2016

It's not uncommon for me to read about female protagonists who are "the good ones" in their families. In fact, this is the norm with most romance books, I feel like. However, Sugar stands out for the reason that our leading lady is actually strong, independent, goal-oriented, and ballsy. We'll talk more about her--and Connor--in a little bit but for now, here's what you need to know about this short contemporary romance book.

Title: Sugar (A Love Lane Short #2)
Author: Olivia L. Thomas
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: March 20, 2016
Source: ARC Given by Author and Tour Organizer
Find on Goodreads: http://bit.ly/1MfC0US

SYNOPSIS:

Danielle Reed has always been the responsible one in her family. Work hard, follow the rules, and arrive on time—these are the traits she thought would bring her life meaning and purpose.

She was wrong.

On the eve of her thirtieth birthday, Danielle finds herself alone—well, as long as you don’t count the two bottles of wine by her side—and rethinking the path she has chosen for herself.

She wants more: passion, whimsy, excitement.

How does a self-professed uptight businesswoman learn to let go and finally find her bliss?

She drinks more wine.

And she meets Connor Davis.

REVIEW:

Sugar is the definition of short but sweet. This won't give readers that heart-gripping pain some romance novels with deep-rooted issues offer, but this will put a smile on your face and make you sigh and giggle a few times.

The main characters, Danielle or Dani and Connor, are both very entertaining and amusing. They're complete opposites yet complement each other a ton, and their chemistry is explosive. Danielle has a very colourful train of thought, which we all have access to because Sugar is written in the first person (which I prefer). She's confident and insecure at the same time, independent but yearns for that day she can depend on someone, and tough but soft-hearted as well. She's a contradiction, but she knows all her strengths, weaknesses, and flaws.

Being with Connor didn't mean she had to change who she is, she just had to embrace a better and happier lifestyle with less work and more play, less stress and more relaxation time. Can I just point out how much I love Connor; he's such a fun guy to be around with. Even if he's not your boyfriend, just to have him in your life is awesome, I think. He's witty, charming, a bit cocky, and can hold his own--all of which are great traits.

The story flows easily and the book runs at a good pace. I guess there were a couple of times I got exhausted with Dani's thoughts. LOL! I'm sorry, it was just so detailed and long, I feel like the pages could've been used for other scenes.

Anyway, overall a good, quick read that all those into cute, easy love stories will enjoy. I give this a good 4 stars and recommend that ya'll pick up a copy over at Amazon.

COVER REVEAL of Hard Case by Marc Hirsch

July 15, 2015

Title: Hard Case (Alice White, Investigator #2)
Author: Marc Hirsch
Genre: Romantic Suspense/ Mystery
Age Category: Adult
Release Date: July 15, 2015
Published by: Books, Authors and Artists

SYNOPSIS:
In 1956 New York City, a year after Alice White’s first investigation, she becomes entangled in her Bronx neighbor's troubles. A United States customs inspector at the Port of New York, he has fallen into the grasp of the vicious dockworkers' boss.

As Alice attempts to free him, the power struggle created by the post-World War II wave of Italian immigration into the predominantly Irish run West Side imperils both. Can Alice save him? If she fails both may die.

EXCERPT:
In the 1500s, the Lenape Indians traveled and fished the waterways of New York Harbor. Four centuries later the harbor had become the site of the bustling Port of New York and New Jersey.

A dense fog hung over the water. Waves slapped the piers. The smell of seawater and tar penetrated the evening air. Thick lines groaned under the strain of ships at dock. Tugs tended their floating trusts. In the final hours of the night, the port sat at rest, protecting its living organism of cargo and crew―at rest, but certainly not asleep.

Mild as the spring temperature was, the young man shook as if it were polar winter. His hands trembled violently as he lit his last cigarette. He crushed the empty package and tossed it into the breeze. He leaned into the chain link fence against which he had been thrown. He lifted his battered face to the stars. Through his broken glasses, they sparkled like diamonds on a jeweler’s cloth.

The night air penetrated his broken nose. The taste of beer mingled with his blood.

He took a deep drag on the cigarette, only vaguely aware of the two men standing in front of him.

One of them held a gun pointed at his forehead. They were shadows, phantoms, ghosts in the moonlight.

The finger whitened on the trigger.

His being merged with its surroundings: the docks, the sea, the gulls, the sky overhead.

Somewhere inside him was an ethereal presence, an island of tranquility he had been aware of since he was a small child. A dream-self he was confident would survive this night even though he was positive his mortal body would not.

Alice White’s boyfriend, Jim Peters, was still asleep in her apartment on the west side of the six-lane boulevard known as the Grand Concourse in the Bronx, New York City. It may not have been the standard of behavior for a single woman in 1956, but she was perfectly happy with their relationship and had no intention of further committing herself, despite his apparent wish for her to do so. One failed marriage for each of them was enough to last a lifetime, she thought.

It was a sunny morning in May. Jim awoke and watched Alice, unbeknownst to her, put on her favorite pair of gym shorts and band her straight, black hair into a ponytail. She quietly left the apartment and ran north up the Concourse toward Jerome Avenue. She was thirty-five years old with curves in all the right places. Alice would only have been superficially pretty, but her assertive nature rendered her incredibly attractive to some men, intimidating to others. Jim liked to think of himself as self-confident, but Alice strained his nerves to their limit. He had to admit that this was part of his attraction to her.

She had graceful, athletic legs. A woman running bare-legged on the public streets, for anyone to see, was yet another deviation from society’s norms. She honestly did not care. She was running in the footsteps of her idol, the “flying housewife,” Fanny Blankers-Koen, who had won four gold medals at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London. If it was okay for Fanny, then it was good enough for her.

Alongside the elevated train tracks of Jerome, Alice made her way up the sidewalk, north until she got to Zabronski’s Meats.

The sawdust on the floor and the smell of fresh cut meat always made her mouth water in anticipation of Zabronski’s beautiful steaks and chops on her table.

“Vhat can I get for you this fine morning, young lady?” the short, ebullient, mostly bald-headed butcher asked Alice in his thick European accent. He had been liberated from a concentration camp at the end of the war. His protuberant belly and multiple gold-capped teeth were the result of his non-stop celebration of freedom in the decade since. Alice had met his lovely wife and delightful daughter on previous visits to the shop.

Her answer to Mr. Zabronski was lost in the deafening screech of metal on metal, as a train passed overhead.

When the train was gone she repeated, “Mr. Zabronski, I am dying for some of your lamb chops. Would you cut me six, please?”

“Six? Aha. You’re having company. It wouldn’t be that good-looking young man you were in here with a couple of weeks ago would it? You like that man, huh? The way he looks at you I’d say he’s a good one and very polite too.”

Alice was amused that everyone was “young” to Mr. Zabronski as well as “good looking,” “handsome,” or “pretty.” She enjoyed the fact that he liked Jim. Mr. Z was in his sixties, but he had a certain sadness―and a stare in his eyes―that made him seem much older. He had told her of his captivity and terror in the camp. He would never lose that look, it seemed to her. She could only imagine the cruelty he had been subjected to. The thick-shouldered butcher was the classic immigrant that the Statue of Liberty was meant to welcome.

Alice watched Mr. Zabronski deftly cut her chops from a rack of lamb. He was a surgeon in a blood-stained white apron. She took money out of her pocket as he finished wrapping the meat in butcher paper and tying the package with string. He made change for her from his ancient cash register.

“Thank you, Mr. Zabronski. Say hello to your family for me.”

“Be well, young lady. Enjoy your lamb.”

Alice stepped onto the sidewalk and spotted an acne-pocked teenage boy sprinting toward her with a lady’s handbag under his arm. A young woman ran after him yelling, “Stop! Stop! Give me back my purse! Help, somebody, he stole my purse!”

Alice put her foot out and sent the boy, face first, onto the pavement. She grabbed the purse.

Mr. Zabronski appeared in the doorway of his shop, brandishing a knife. He looked to be considering carving the thief into pieces. He glared at the fallen man. The kid stood up, sneering back through his bleeding face at Alice, Zabronski, and the woman whose purse he had taken, apparently contemplating an attack to retrieve his prize. Zabronski shook his knife at him and surveyed the kid’s face. It would take weeks to heal.

Alice glared back at the enraged teenager and told him, “Yah, that’s right: two women and a butcher. You think you can take us?”

The boy reconsidered, turned, and then fled up the hill empty-handed, away from the pretty, but insane, woman and her two companions.

“I DIDN’T THINK SO!” Alice yelled after him.

“That was so kind of you and so brave too,” the sandy-haired woman told Alice. “I can’t thank you enough. My name is Susan Atkins. Please, let me buy you a cup of coffee.”

Alice handed Susan her purse. “Okay,” hesitating just a moment. “Sure, but I can’t stay long. I have to get this meat home. I have company.”

Alice then turned to Mr. Zabronski and told him, “Thanks for the backup Mr. Zabronski. As always, the perfect gentleman.”

“It didn’t look to me like you needed any backup, young lady. You’re a credit to your sex. This’ll be a great advertisement for the business. I can see the headline: ‘Purse Snatcher Foiled By Gorgeous Young Lady Customer Of Zabronski’s Fabulous Butcher Shop!!!’ Come by next time your boyfriend is in town, and I’ll cut you some excellent steaks, on the house.”

“What a great idea for publicity, Mr. Z. It just so happens I have a friend at the Post, a reporter named Franklin Jones. I think I’ll give him a call and see if he’ll run it. This’ll put me in solid with my bosses, the attorneys, downtown. They love to hear about me risking my life thwarting crime.” Alice gave him a cheeky grin. “It’s their peculiar form of entertainment. Who knows? It may bring in business for you and them both.”

He wished she hadn’t mentioned sex. But now that she had, he couldn’t leave it alone. “You want sex?” He was pleased his voice sounded normal.

She shrugged, the movement raising her breasts beneath her T-shirt. At least she was wearing a bra, though he could still make out her nipples beneath the thin material.

“I hadn’t really thought about it except as a means to an end. But I guess so. I’m a normal woman, after all, and you’re….”

“I’m?”

“Well, I suppose you’re good-looking and you’ve been around.”

“I think I’ve just been insulted.”

She grinned. “I didn’t mean to, but you’re my friend. I never thought about you like that. And then you kissed me and suddenly…” She shrugged, and he held his breath. “And suddenly I did.”

And his dick just got a whole lot harder.

“But don’t worry about it,” she continued. “It’s not your problem.” She pursed her lips.

“Hey, maybe I’ll get a vibrator.”

He’d been about to swallow. Now he spurted champagne across the table. “Sorry,” he muttered as his mind flooded with a deluge of totally inappropriate images. She obviously had no clue of the effect she had on him. He wondered if anyone would notice if he poured the rest of the champagne in his lap.

Maybe he’d buy her a vibrator. Then he could fantasize… Damn, he was one sick bastard.

“Aren’t you hungry?” she asked.

Her pizza was finished. He’d barely touched his. He wasn’t hungry, at least not for food.

“Help yourself,” he said.

She picked up another slice. “I suppose if we decide to go ahead with this baby, then we’ll have to have sex. You’re just going to have to close your eyes and think of England.”

He cleared his throat. “Actually, I was thinking more along the lines of artificial insemination.”

And the half-eaten slice of pizza dropped from her fingers.

Landon

I now have Willow against the brick wall. I put my hand on her shoulder to feel how tense she is. Lightly running my hand down her arm, I reach her fingers and loosen the neck of the violin from her grip. I set it to the ground gently and do the same to her bow in the opposite hand.

I lightly massage her palms and she gasps. I'm only inches from her body. Her lips are parted and her eyes are wide. I close the distance so my chest is flush against hers. I feel her everywhere we touch. She's soft, warm, and giving me a buzz.

"What are you doing?" she asks.

I don't answer. Instead, I run one hand up the inside of her arm. Goosebumps follow the two fingers I trail lightly over her skin. My hand curves over her shoulder just as her breathing quickens. I stare down at her eyes where the pupils are so large that the green has disappeared.

"Landon," she whispers.

"Willow," I tease back. My hand moves over her collarbone and wraps around the back of her neck.

She's trapped in my hold. Pinned to the brick behind her, she hasn't made a move to break free. Her eyelids get heavy and her look is hooded. When I lick my lips, she watches the movement. I love the way she looks right now. She's in a trance, spellbound, and only looking at me. I lean forward, my stare narrowing on her pink lips.

For the first time, I'm imagining a future. Always so busy replaying the past, I never look forward. I'm picturing my mouth covering hers. I'm imagining what she would taste like and the sound she would make when I flicked my tongue against hers. When I see her swallow hard, I see myself kissing down the soft skin of her throat. I let myself play out a scenario where we keep going. I hear her moans, see her squeezing her thighs together. She pants and arches her body into mine.

"Landon. Don't," she breathes across my lips. "Please."
